In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging since there are two connector pins and they perform different functions but the best method of testing it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. If you're having issues with this component, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a massive decrease in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got zero Ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car can start if the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is connected but it still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, as i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Test them out to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these goes wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire while in the gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. 5. Tachometer
